IPAF Safety Harness Training

Working at height carries risk, and safety must be the absolute priority whenever anyone works at height on Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). We approach harness training with a simple objective: To make sure equipment is used correctly, consistently and in line with current safety standards. Our IPAF safety harness training focuses on practical understanding, so delegates or attendees know what to use, when to use it and how to use it properly on site.

At North East Access Training (NEAT), we have over 45 years of experience delivering accredited safety harness training and IPAF harness training. We rely on instructors who have worked in real operational environments, not just training settings. This allows us to explain not only what the guidance says, but how it applies in everyday work. The aim is to make sure participants can apply what they learn without uncertainty and leave the harness training course with clear, usable knowledge.

We run courses from our 21,000 sq ft training centre in Birtley, County Durham. The facility supports both classroom-based learning and hands-on practice. We keep scheduling flexible and do not set minimum attendee numbers, so harness training can be arranged around your requirements without delay. We provide harness training for companies based in Newcastle and the surrounding areas, with flexible scheduling and easy access to our training centre.

What IPAF Harness Training Covers

Here at North East Access Training, we deliver the course with a clear focus on how harnesses and lanyards are used when operating MEWPs. Our IPAF harness training covers the relevant regulations for working at height and explains what is expected from both employers and operatives in practical terms. We make sure candidates understand when a safety harness is required and the risks linked to incorrect use or poor equipment choice.

The course covers the process of selecting suitable harnesses and lanyards based on the task and equipment being used. We then cover fitting and adjustment in detail, so the harness performs correctly within a work restraint system. As part of our safety harness training in Newcastle, we also address connection methods, anchor points and equipment limitations, as these are common areas where mistakes occur.

We keep the focus on how harness use fits into overall site safety. During the course, there will also be a detailed explanation with a practical example on how PPE supports safe working practices rather than treating it as a separate requirement, which is a key part of any effective harness training course.

Inspection, Maintenance and Compliance

Here we make sure to treat inspection as a key part of safe use, not an afterthought. During our harness training, the participants are guided and get trained to carry out pre-use checks properly, identify wear or damage and decide whether the equipment is still suitable for use. At NEAT, we highlight typical faults and explain when equipment must be taken out of service.

Formal inspection processes are also covered, including record keeping and traceability. We make sure attendees understand how to complete inspection records correctly and keep them in line with regulatory expectations. In addition, we cover storage and handling to reduce unnecessary damage and maintain equipment in usable condition, which is very important for maintaining a valid harness training certificate.

Practical Training and Assessment

Practical work is included throughout the course. Attendees handle equipment, carry out inspections and practise fitting and adjusting harnesses themselves. This makes sure that they are comfortable using the equipment rather than relying only on theory, which is a central part of our IPAF safety harness training approach.

We assess attendees through a written test and a practical evaluation. Certification is only issued when our skilled instructors are satisfied that procedures can be applied correctly and safely. Successful completion leads to a recognised harness training certificate.

Course Duration and Delivery

Our harness training course runs for a minimum of half a day. However, the exact duration depends on the number of attendees and their level of experience.

Training can take place at our North East Access Training centre or be arranged to suit your site or organisation. We keep the course content consistent so that all required standards are met, regardless of where the training is delivered.

Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for anyone involved in working at height using MEWPs. This includes operatives using harnesses and lanyards, as well as supervisors and managers responsible for safe working practices. It is also relevant for those who carry out equipment inspections and maintain compliance within their organisation.

Our IPAF harness training and safety harness training courses are designed to address common gaps in knowledge. No previous experience is required. However, incorrect harness use and poor inspection remain common issues on site, which this harness training directly addresses through structured instruction and practical application.

Certification and Booking

We provide certification to delegates who complete the course and meet the required standard. This confirms their ability to use, inspect and manage harness equipment in line with current guidance and provides a recognised harness training certificate.

Course costs depend on attendee numbers and delivery requirements. For accurate pricing and availability, contact us directly, and we will provide a quotation based on your needs for IPAF safety harness training or any related harness training course.
